U.S. President-elect Donald Trump might search dialogue with North Korean chief Kim Jong-un after his inauguration and will pursue a „small deal“ on the North’s nuclear program, South Korea’s spy company mentioned Monday.

The Nationwide Intelligence Service (NIS) made the evaluation throughout a closed-door briefing to lawmakers amid expectations that Trump, who will take workplace Jan. 20, is more likely to need to repeat his summit diplomacy with Kim.

„There’s a chance that Trump might search dialogue with Kim as Trump himself views his earlier summits with Kim as main achievements throughout his first administration,“ the NIS was quoted as saying by lawmakers.

The spy company noticed possibilities of Trump’s engagement with Kim, citing his nomination of former Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell as his presidential envoy for particular missions and his number of Alex Wong, a former North Korea coverage official, as a key White Home adviser.

Trump met with Kim Jong-un 3 times throughout his first administration, together with their first summit in Singapore in June 2018 and one other one in Hanoi in February 2019. Because the Hanoi summit ended and not using a deal, denuclearization talks over the North’s nuclear applications have been stalled.

„If america believes it’s tough to count on North Korea’s full denuclearization in a brief time period, a ‚small deal‘ — small-scaled negotiations for freezing the North’s nuclear applications or nuclear disarmament — could also be potential,“ the NIS mentioned. (Yonhap)
